Throughout Introduction to Statistics, an effort has been made to convey ideas in simple, direct ways with active involvement of the student. Another example, this time from near the end of the introduction to correlation, shows how the student is encouraged to manipulate the display to get a feel for the notion of prediction. By clicking on the scatter plot, the student can select a sample of results in a narrow band of values of one variable. Though the second variable has a fairly wide range of variation, nevertheless the mean of the second variable rises and falls when the mean of the first variable does.
